To launch the 2019 STEAM year, we asked the students to contemplate both What is STEAM? (which we decided is the creative place where Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math interact, based on this video that we watched) as well as What qualities do I need to be successful in STEAM? We pondered who are our best STEAM selves. Then the students created them!
Kindergarten and first grade were given outlines of a body, on which they were to place their most meaningful STEAM adjective, such as creative or curious or determined. Then they cut their figure out and posed him or herself using a pipe cleaner, because you know there's no lying down in STEAM!
2nd through 5th grade were given fewer restrictions, a broader range of words to choose from (although many students chose to write words themselves) and more materials to create their 3D STEAM self. The freedom to choose and use their voices to determine what qualities they bring and what makes them successful in STEAM resulted in some amazingly unique results!
These STEAM selves will be on display in the library and in the display case during this week's Open House! You won't want to miss them!
