Jack & The Beanstalk

After reading Steven Kellogg's powerfully illustrated version of Jack and the Beanstalk, students in kindergarten through 2nd grade were asked to engineer some way for Jack to carry a golden egg down the beanstalk so he doesn't have to steal the hen. Kids had some big ideas about how to attach an actual chicken's egg to a Ken doll and carry it down a 6' ladder!

Their drafts and discussion have come a long way from the beginning of the year!

Then they got to testing! Their designs had to adhere to the doll without tape! They had to design, test, and design again as they realized that getting the egg down safely was not going to be a simple fix!

Finally, the day for testing our designs came! We are so proud of our engineers, who helped Jack get a golden egg down the beanstalk!

Testing Our Stuck Designs

Last week was the culmination of our many months' journey of understanding how technology improves the quality of people's lives and the importance of building with others in mind. This week the students will reflect on all that they have learned, but here is a celebration of their very hard work!
